چکیده

This paper focuses on human behavior in web surfing during the special stage called Flash Crowd (FC) period. Some statistical properties of human behavior are investigated. A moving approximate entropy (ApEn)method is provided to precisely locate the FC stage at first. Then the multiscale entropy (MSE) method is applied to study the difference of behaviors between the FC stage and the Normal stage. The lower entropy value may imply that collective behavior in the FC stage tends to be more consistent and follows a process with self-similarity. Further investigation by MSE and interval time distribution on the collective level and the individual level reveals that the origin of FC formation is not due to the increasing number of users, but more likely the change of dynamic mechanism of individual behavior. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Detecting and Handling Flash-Crowd Events on Cloud Environments

Cloud computing is a highly scalable computing paradigm where resources are delivered to users on demand via Internet. There are several areas that can benefit from cloud computing and one in special is gaining much attention: the flash-crowd handling. Flash-crowd events happen when servers are unable to handle the volume of requests for a specific content (or a set of contents) that actually r...

Performance Analysis of a Flash-Crowd Management System

Flash-crowds are a growing obstacle to the further expansion of the Internet. One of the solutions to this problem is to replicate the most popular documents to different web servers and to redirect client requests to these replicas. In this thesis we present a performance analysis of a flash-crowd management system based on RaDaR. We adjust the architecture of RaDaR to focus more on adaptabili...

Unanticipated Evolution of Web Service Provision Software using Generative Object Communication

Providing service via the Web differs from other service provision environments in that it is possible for the unexpected arrival of a massive number of service requests in a small time-frame, a situation commonly referred to as a flash crowd. Events of this nature are beyond the control of the service provider, and have the potential to severely degrade service quality and, in the worst case, ...

Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Flash Crowds on the Internet

A flash crowd is a surge in traffic to a particular web site that causes the site to be virtually unreachable. We present a model of flash crowd events and evaluate the performance of various multi-level caching techniques suitable for managing these events. Our results show that significant reductions in client response times and server and network loads can be achieved during flash crowds usi...
